Horizon Air — which normally conducts three flights a day out of Santa Barbara Airport (one to Seattle, and two to Sacramento) — announced on June 16 that it will be discontinuing service to Sacramento starting August 22. Once-a-day service to Seattle will remain in place.

Jen Boyer, media relations manager for Horizon Air, attributed the discontinuation to a reduction of aircraft. The Horizon fleet normally has 57 planes, according to the press release, and starting August 22, the fleet will be four aircraft short. These four, reports Boyer, are CRJ-700 jets, which the company aims to sublease in favor of transitioning to a Q400 turboprops-only fleet.

Horizon, a subsidiary of Alaska Air Group, Inc, serves 48 cities in North America, Canada, and Mexico. It has also discontinued routes in Boise, Los Angeles, and Seattle, according to the press release. For customers affected by the change in service, Horizon will offer a refund or reroute their flights.

Oh no! The alternatives to this flight are terrible, long and expensive. Darn!

What's not to like? Flying via SF or LA means more carbon emissions.

We rely on Horizon and find this very bad news. They are a great carrier, with an excellent on-time record and good service. These flights are always full, so it is surprising that they are reducing their schedule.
